General Information
The Summer Institute 2020 program has been canceled. Please contact with any questions and refer to the Wells College Updates on COVID-19 for the Campus Community page for more information
Our annual Summer Institute offers week-long intensive courses in letterpress printing, hand bookbinding, artists’ books, lettering and paper arts taught by some of the foremost artists working today.
SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
We offer a limited number of need-based scholarships, awarded based on financial need and merit. We prioritize funding for current students, early-career artists & professionals, and those experiencing financial hardship — but all are welcome to apply. Prior experience in the book arts is not necessary.
Please note: room, board, and transportation costs are not covered by scholarships. Prior to applying for a scholarship, please review all information on the Participant Information page.
Deadline for submission of all materials, including the letter of recommendation, is March 15, 2020.
INTERNSHIP INFORMATION
The Summer Institute offers six unpaid internships for college students, recent graduates, and working artists. Each intern will be enrolled in one course per week and will act as assistant to the instructor. Interns arrive Saturday, July 11th, 2020 and depart Saturday, July 25th, 2020.
In exchange for their assistance, Interns receive free housing and meal plan for the full duration of the program. Interns are responsible for any costs associated with transportation.
Interns are expected to arrive to the Wells College campus on the afternoon of Saturday, Jully 11th for a welcome meal and orientation. On Sunday of each session, the interns assist in setting up classrooms, organizing materials, and registering arriving participants. Interns are expected to assist and participate during class times. Classes run Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 12:00pm and 1:30pm to 5:00pm. On Friday, Interns help to install their class’ works in the campus gallery. The evenings and the Saturday between sessions are times in which it is welcomed (encouraged!) for interns to utilize the studio facilities and enjoy the social and community aspects of the Summer Institute program.
Please note that if not selected for an Internship, applicants can be considered for a Scholarship. Deadline for submission of all materials, including two letters of recommendation, is March 15, 2020.
