Our annual Summer Institute offers week-long intensive courses in letterpress printing, hand bookbinding, artist’s books, lettering and paper arts taught by some of the foremost book artists working today.
Plan to arrive on campus Sunday afternoon between 12:00 and 3:00pm. We’ll have introductions and dinner at 6:00. Classes run Monday through Friday, 9:00am to noon and 1:30 to 5:00pm. Departure is the following Saturday morning by 10:00am after breakfast.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition for one week is $1,000 and includes all materials needed for the course. Participants may register for only one class per week. A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required with your registration. Accommodations and meals are not included in tuition costs.
On-campus accommodations are in a dormitory called Weld House. Linens and access to internet are included. The dorm features a shared kitchen and lounges. All bathrooms are shared, but lockable for privacy. Since the weather may vary a great deal throughout the week, we recommend that participants bring clothing for both warm and cool temperatures. Participants may use the athletic center, featuring a weight room and pool, and/or jump off the dock into Cayuga Lake! Bring a bathing suit and shoes you can wear in the water (the rocks are sharp)! Participants will each have a private or shared (and air conditioned!) room on campus from Sunday afternoon until Saturday morning (select option during registration). Off-campus lodging options include bed and breakfasts and major hotel chains 20-40 minutes from campus. Here are a few suggestions from the Wells website.
Participants are encouraged to eat on campus. The meal plan includes buffet-style Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and snacks and coffee at breaks. We will have vegetarian / vegan / GF choices at every meal. Please contact the director for special dietary arrangements.
We regret to say that the Book Arts Center is not currently handicapped accessible. Please contact us with questions.
Scholarships and Internships
We offer a limited number of need-based scholarships to college students, recent graduates and others where tuition cost is a deciding factor. Scholarships may be used for one of the two weeks. The Institute also offers five non-paying internships to college and graduate students in the book arts. Each intern will be enrolled in one course each of the two weeks and act as assistant to the instructor. Applicants for a scholarship or internship should send a letter of interest and two letters of recommendation to the Director by March 15, 2019. Download Application.
Course Supplies and Materials Fees
All basic materials and tools will be supplied for each course. Additional and optional book arts materials will also be available for sale at the Book Arts Center or suggested by the instructor.
There is a pick-up and drop-off at Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport or Transport Center (Amtrak/Bus Station) for $60 round trip. A Wells van will pick up participants at Hancock airport at 2 or 3 times on Sunday afternoon (TBD by consensus). The van will drop participants off at the airport the following Saturday late morning (again, scheduled as needed to accommodate flights as best as possible). Please note that the drive from Aurora to Syracuse is about one hour and fifteen minutes.
We encourage early registration, as enrollment is limited. The non-refundable deposit is due with the registration. The remaining tuition and any fees are due by June 15, 2019.
You may cancel your registration until June 15th for a refund minus the $100 deposit. After that date, there will be no refunds. Should we need to cancel a course, you will be notified and offered another class or a full refund. We are not responsible for non-refundable airline tickets.
