Our annual Summer Institute offers week-long intensive courses in letterpress printing, hand bookbinding, artist’s books, lettering arts and font design taught by some of the foremost book artists in the U.S. and Europe.

Schedule
Plan to arrive on campus Sunday afternoon between 12:00 and 4:00pm. We’ll have introductions and dinner at 6:00. Classes run Monday through Friday, 9:00am  to noon and 1:30  to 5:00pm. Departure is the following Saturday morning by 10:00am.

Tuition and Fees
Tuition for one week is $1,000. Participants may register for only one class per week. The registration form includes a list of all fees including meals, accommodations, and transportation.

A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required with your registration.

Accommodations

On-campus accommodations are in a dormitory called Weld. Linens and access to internet are included, and the dorm features a shared kitchen, lounges, and computer lab. Since the weather may vary a great deal throughout the week, we recommend that participants bring clothing for both warm and cool temperatures. Participants may use the athletic center, featuring a weight room and pool, and/or jump off the dock into Cayuga Lake! So bring a bathing suit and shoes you can wear in the water (the rocks are sharp)!

Participants will each have a private or shared (and air conditioned!) room on campus. Off-campus lodging options include bed and breakfasts and major hotel chains 20-40 minutes from campus. Here are a few suggestions from the Wells website.

Accessibility
We regret to say that the Book Arts Center is not currently handicapped accessible, although the dormitory is. Please contact us with questions.

Meals
Participants are encouraged to eat on campus. The meal Plan includes buffet style Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and snacks and coffee at breaks. We will have vegetarian/vegan/GF choices at every meal. Be sure to indicate your meal preference on the registration form.

Scholarships
We offer a limited number of need-based scholarships to recent graduates. Applicants should send a letter of interest and two letters of support to the Director by March 15, 2017. Download Application

Internships
The Institute offers four non-paying internships to college and graduate students in the book arts. Each intern will be enrolled in one course and T.A. in another. Applicants should send a letter of interest and two letters of support to the Director by March 15, 2017.  Download Application

Course supplies and materials fees
Basic materials and tools will be supplied for each course. Additional and optional book arts materials will also be available for sale at the Book Arts Center or suggested by instructor.

Airport Shuttle
There is a pick-up and drop-off at Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport for $60 round trip. A Wells van will pick up participants at Hancock airport at 2 or 3 time schedules (TBD by consensus) on Sunday afternoon; the van will drop participants off at the airport the following Saturday late morning (again, scheduled as needed to accommodate flights as best as possible). The drive from Aurora to Hancock Airport is about one hour and fifteen minutes.

Deadlines
We encourage early registration, as enrollment is limited. The non-refundable deposit is due with the registration form. (Early-bird registration before Jan 1, 2017 is $100 off regular tuition) The remaining tuition and any fees are due by June 25, 2017.

Refund Policy
You may cancel your registration until June 15th for a refund minus the $100 deposit. After that date, there will be no refunds. Should we need to cancel a course, you will be notified and offered another class or a full refund. We are not responsible for non-refundable airline tickets.
